Join your family in Australia - parent, child or other family visas

Parents with qualifying sponsors, both working age and old aged, have an avenue to migrate to Australia, but applicants need to be aware that general subclasses within the parent category have prolonged processing times due to restricted approval numbers each year.

The more streamlined subclasses known as “contributory” are processed far more rapidly due to much higher allocation of places per year but require an extremely high financial contribution to cover future health costs.

Your child, whether natural, step or adopted can apply for permanent residency under your sponsorship as an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

Generally, they must be under 25 years, single and be dependant on you unless they have a permanent disability.

Orphaned children who are related to you can also apply for permanent residency under your guardianship.

A number of other visas exist which cater for family membership not included in the above categories such as “remaining relatives”, “carers”, or “aged dependent relatives” with carer applications given priority.

General requirements

All visa subclasses require the applicant and their family members to meet what is known as basic requirements.

These usually relate to age, health, character and English language ability.

If you do not satisfy the basic requirements that relate to the subclass of visa you are applying for then you have no prospects of securing a visa to permit you to enter Australia.

Your previous immigration history is taken into account when deciding to approve or deny an application. So when entering and remaining in Australia you must ensure that you abide by the conditions and guidelines that relate to your current visa or you put at risk any future prospects you may have to migrate.

Preliminary assessment

As the individual criteria relating to each of the above visas can be complex, Australian Immigration Advisors do not provide free online assessments.

We feel that in order to provide you with meaningful advice in relation to your visa prospects in this category we need to communicate with you personally.

We need to determine your exact circumstances, something which requires specific questions about you and your current situation, not general enquiries that only allow a fairly non-committal response as to likely success of any application by you.

If you want an honest response and one that doesn’t lead you to false hopes that cannot be substantiated please contact us and submit your enquiry.

If it can be answered quickly and simply there may not even be any charge associated with our advice.

If further investigation is required we recommend that you invest the small sum requested to ensure that you are getting an advice that is specific to you and your current circumstances

Please complete your current personal details below and someone from Australian Immigration Advisors will contact you to advise you of the next step.
